ChargePoint Targets One of EV Adoption’s Biggest Challenges
While most electric vehicle charging happens at home, that experience is not always available to residents living in apartments and condominium communities. Limited access to dedicated charging infrastructure remains one of the most significant barriers to EV adoption among multifamily housing residents.
To help address this challenge, ChargePoint has partnered with OBE Power to deploy approximately 2,500 new charging ports at multifamily properties across the United States.
The initiative aims to make overnight charging more accessible for residents while reducing the complexity often associated with installing and managing charging infrastructure in shared residential environments.
A Turnkey Model for Property Owners
One of the key features of the partnership is its turnkey approach. Under the agreement, OBE Power will own and operate the charging infrastructure, handling maintenance, insurance, repairs, energy reimbursement, and operational management.
This model removes a major obstacle for property owners and landlords, who often face concerns about installation costs, ongoing maintenance, and operational responsibilities.
By shifting these responsibilities to a dedicated operator, multifamily properties can offer EV charging amenities without making significant upfront investments.
Expanding Access Where It Is Needed Most
Although public charging networks continue to grow, home charging remains the preferred option for most EV owners because of its convenience and lower costs. However, apartment residents frequently lack access to dedicated Level 2 charging stations where they live.
The new deployment is designed to close this gap by bringing charging infrastructure directly to residential communities. This allows drivers to charge their vehicles overnight or during extended parking periods, replicating many of the benefits enjoyed by homeowners.
As EV adoption grows, expanding access to charging in multifamily housing is becoming an increasingly important part of the broader infrastructure strategy.
Strengthening the Level 2 Charging Network
According to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center, ChargePoint currently operates more than 80,000 charging ports nationwide, with the vast majority being Level 2 chargers.
Level 2 charging is particularly well suited for locations where vehicles remain parked for extended periods, including apartment complexes, workplaces, hotels, and retail destinations. While these chargers do not deliver the rapid charging speeds of DC fast chargers, they provide an efficient and practical solution for daily charging needs.
The addition of 2,500 new ports will further strengthen ChargePoint’s position in the residential charging segment and expand access for thousands of EV drivers.
Why Multifamily Charging Matters
Industry analysts increasingly view multifamily charging as one of the next major frontiers for EV infrastructure development. As more consumers consider switching to electric vehicles, access to reliable home charging remains a critical factor in purchase decisions.
For many apartment residents, charging availability can be the difference between choosing an EV and remaining with a conventional vehicle. Expanding infrastructure in these communities helps remove that barrier and supports broader electrification goals.
The initiative also highlights how infrastructure providers are adapting their business models to address specific market needs, creating solutions tailored to property owners, residents, and operators alike.
Why This Matters for the EV Industry
The growth of EV adoption depends not only on vehicle availability but also on convenient access to charging. Multifamily housing represents a significant portion of the residential market, making it a crucial area for infrastructure investment.
Projects like this demonstrate how partnerships and innovative deployment models can accelerate charging access while reducing financial and operational barriers. As electrification expands, residential charging solutions will play a key role in supporting long-term growth.
What It Means for EVIS America
This is exactly the type of infrastructure innovation shaping the future of mobility. As EV adoption grows, the focus is expanding beyond highways and public charging corridors to include residential communities and everyday charging needs.
That is where EVIS America 2026 becomes especially relevant. Taking place on November 3–5, 2026 in Toledo, Ohio, the event brings together charging providers, property developers, automakers, policymakers, and technology leaders to explore how EV infrastructure can be deployed more effectively across all segments of the mobility ecosystem.
